Intensive Academic Courses

Our intensive academic preparation courses are designed to provide an important/focussed boost for international students who are joining an independent school in the UK, or who are considering joining one in the future.
Many international students, particularly those who may not have strong English skills or much knowledge of UK culture, can find the first few weeks at a British independent boarding school challenging. By attending our Intensive academic course, students will be able to develop the following key skills which will prepare them for their new start and settle in much more quickly.
- Learning and recording subject specific English vocabulary
- Effective listening skills
- Academic writing skills
- Efficient reading techniques such as skimming and scanning
- Improved pronunciation, fluency, and public speaking condfidence
- Organisation and improved time management
- Student skills
- Managing well being and stress
- Practical science skills
- Debating practice
- Awareness of British culture and familiarity with the daily routines they are likely to encounter at their destination school.
Class time will be 60 hours over the 2 week period with additional time provided for study skills and wellbeing sessions. In addition there will be time allocated for sports and activities and 2 all-day excursions.
Class sizes are small, so students benefit from significant individual attention.
This course will be ideal for students who:
- Are 12 to 17 years old
- Are joining a UK independent school in September and want to give themselves the best opportunity to settle in to their new school as quickly as possible
- May be considering joining a UK independent school in the future and want to experience whether this is the right choice for them long term
- Students who want an academic course to boost their English language ability
- Individuals or student groups.
The total price to attend the course for the two weeks will be £3060, which includes all accommodation, food, lessons, activities and excursions. Because of the course dates it is likely that many students will travel from Sherborne to their destination school, and there may be an opportunity for students to extend their accommodation for an additional charge, if the course end date doesn't align with their start date at their new school.
