Man of the Match:
The first fixture of the new season is always highly anticipated and the match against Park School was no exception, with the promise of another high scoring affair between the two teams.
An anxious start led to Sherborne International conceding a goal within the first minute of the game. Shortly after, Marco produced a vital save to keep the score at 1-0, galvanising the team. The leaders within the group had to step up so the team could reorganise and get a foothold in the game. Sherborne International rallied.
After a patient build up, Martin added a stylish finishing touch to bring the scores level. With Sherborne in the ascendancy an away goal was the most likely outcome but for all their dominance clinical finishing had deserted them. The away side were left to rue their missed chances as, against the run of play, a long ball from Park School resulted in a second for the home side. This was a wakeup call for Sherborne and, yet again, they regrouped to assert their dominance.
There was a touch of fortune about the equaliser, however, as a cross from a free-kick rebounded into the net off a Park School defender. With only 10 minutes left in the half Sherborne capitalised on the shift in momentum and went on to add three more goals. Aggressive attacking link up play between Martin, Viktor and Barnaby paid dividends before the half time whistle blew.
Sherborne International did not let complacency creep into their second half performance with a commanding defensive display. A combination of a calming presence provided by Sazi in the heart of the defence and unrelenting work off the ball from Akira led to a complete shut out of the opposition. The faith shown in the younger members of the team turned out to be an inspired decision by the management as both Rafael and Niko shook off any first half nerves to produce an excellent attacking display.
A goal from Viktor opened the second half scoring. Then, with time winding down, the Captain, Barnaby, scored a goal of individual quality to complete his hat-trick and worthy of winning any match. A touch to cushion a ball out of the sky, followed by a quick one two and a strike from 30 yards that rocketed into the top left-hand corner capped off an all-round excellent display. Seven goals conceded does not reflect upon the performance of Park School’s goalkeeper, who produce many reactionary saves, which any player would be proud of.
