School Life

We provide a warm and secure environment for your son or daughter, a home from home, to allow students to grow and succeed.

All students live in one of our boarding houses, normally in single or double bedrooms, with staff always on hand to ensure the welfare of students.

Outside of study time, there are numerous activities available, including sport, music, cookery and dance or simply playing games with friends. Students can also participate in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.

Weekend excursions include going to the cinema or bowling, or trips to interesting local places such as Bath or Exeter.

Life in Sherborne

Sherborne International is located in Dorset, in the south-west of England. Sherborne is a historic and safe town, with a population of around 10,000.

Location

Surrounded by English countryside, we enjoy a beautiful environment with plenty of fresh air, away from large urban populations.

However, larger cities are easy to reach. London is around two hours away by train or car and other beautiful, historic cities like Bath and Exeter are around an hour away.

There is easy access to Heathrow, Gatwick and Bristol airports and an excellent direct train service to London Waterloo.

Historic town

Sherborne has a number of famous historic buildings including the beautiful Abbey, founded in the year 705, where some of our students perform in concerts.

Sherborne Castle was built in the 16th century and was so adored by Sir Walter Raleigh that he built an Elizabethan mansion in the grounds in 1594.

The town is famous for its schools, including Sherborne School, founded in 1550, that still uses the monastic buildings attached to the Abbey. The town also boasts Sherborne Girls School and Sherborne Preparatory School.

The town has an abundance of historic interest with many 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th century houses and medieval buildings. These include The Almshouse of St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist and the 16th century Conduit, which was originally used by monks to do their washing.

Leisure time

Outside of study time, during evenings and weekends, there are numerous leisure activities available to keep students active, relaxed and happy.

Students have the opportunity to play a number of sports, have music lessons, join a choir and take part in drama productions. And students who love the outdoors can challenge themselves by taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme.

The choice of activities changes from term to term and includes futsal, fitness club, snooker/pool club, cookery and dance.

There are also a number of whole school excursions and trips, supported and supervised by our boarding house staff. These include going to watch local sports teams, ten pin bowling, the cinema or doing some shopping.

Excursions to places of local interest such as Bath and Salisbury often take place on Saturdays during the autumn and spring terms.

Saturday evenings are for relaxation and spending time with friends. Students can watch a film on the big screen in the Greenfield Hall, order a take away or make use of the games consoles, table games and libraries in their boarding houses.

On Sundays, junior students often have the chance to learn crafts, do some cookery or play games, whilst activities for older students include running club, badminton, table tennis and swimming.

Sherborne International music concerts, drama productions and inter-house sports tournaments also take place at weekends throughout the year. Students can attend to watch their friends or take part themselves. They can also attend various events such as concerts at Sherborne Boys and Sherborne Girls schools.

Sport

Sport is a very important and enjoyable part of English school life. We prepare students for sports they are likely to play at their next schools including athletics, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, netball and swimming.

As part of our partnership with Sherborne School, our students have access to outstanding sports facilities, including the large outdoor sports fields for football and cricket shown in the video below.

Students are allocated into teams or ‘houses’ within the School and these teams play against each other in various sports competitions during the year. School teams also play against other schools. You can view all fixtures and results.

Our students also use the fabulous indoor swimming pool, gym and indoor courts for badminton, basketball and volleyball at Sherborne Sports Centre.

Our sports teachers provide ongoing coaching to students to help them improve their performance and enjoyment of all sports offered.

Boarding Houses

Our boarding school houses accommodate all our international school students during their studies here. They are conveniently located on campus or within easy walking distance.

As the first international boarding school of its kind in the UK, we have always prided ourselves on one of the best staff to student ratios in the world. Our dedicated full-time house staff are responsible for the well-being of students 24 hours a day. We also have a doctor available every morning, so medical care is always available if needed.

High numbers of dedicated staff ensure that we are able to care for the individual needs of all students, particularly in the first few weeks when some may feel a little homesick. It also allows us to offer a wide variety of sports, activities and excursions to keep students active and happy.

Girls and boys live in separate boarding houses and most have a single or double bedroom, with a few junior girls being allocated a four-bedded room. Where rooms are shared, we aim to ensure room mates speak different languages to encourage communication in English at all times. All students have a comfortable bed, a desk for study and a secure locker.

All boarding school houses have WiFi and common rooms with TVs, DVD players and games consoles, allowing students to relax with friends during evenings and weekends. Desktop computers are also available with access to printers.

Our boarding school houses also have small kitchens where students can make drinks and snacks.
