UK Summer School for International Students - Sherborne International

Summer School Courses

Our UK summer school courses are for international students aged 8-17. The courses are intensive and academic, but as well as working hard, students also have lots of fun with an extensive choice of sports, activities and excursions.

UK summer school options

We have very small class sizes (5 – 8 students) and an overall staff-student ratio of 1:3. This means that parents can relax knowing their children are safe, happy, learning effectively and well looked after in a caring, family environment.

Our UK summer school for international students is located in the town of Sherborne, surrounded by beautiful English countryside.

All our summer courses are based on the same high-quality standards as our school term courses. Written academic and house reports are sent to parents every two weeks and all students receive a certificate of attendance.

The summer course in Sherborne was one of the best things that I have ever done in my life. I never thought that I would have so much fun while doing classes. Everybody is so nice here and the memories and friends I made here will stay in my heart forever.

Intensive English Summer School Course, plus subjects

Our Intensive English Course, plus subjects, has been running for over 25 years. It was the first English summer school course of its kind aimed at international students.

It is aimed at students aged 8-17 who:

  • Wish to improve the fluency and accuracy of their spoken and written English
  • Are considering joining a British independent school and wish to improve their English in this context, including exposure to some more academic language through the subject lessons
  • Are already at a UK school but want to enhance their English language skills
  • Want to sample independent school life and culture in England while socialising with students from different nationalities
  • Want to acclimatise themselves or receive a boost by enrolling on an English summer school course prior to starting at a UK school in September

With English plus the addition of several lessons in different subjects – such as sciences, maths, history, geography, cultural studies, art, drama and computing – this Intensive English course gives a taste of our academic year programme.

The variety of content and language is much appreciated by the students. They enjoy the interactive and dynamic lessons whilst developing their English throughout.

IGCSE or GCSE Preparation Summer Course

Our IGCSE or GCSE Preparation Summer Course gives international students starting (or thinking about starting) IGCSE or GCSE courses the support they need to acquire skills vital to success.

Key points about this summer course

  • 30 lessons per week: 22hr 30m
  • Six lessons in each of four chosen subjects plus six lessons of drama

  • For students with CEFR level B1 and above

Students on our IGCSE or GCSE Preparation Summer Course can choose four subjects from: biology, chemistry, physics, maths, history, English and English literature.

Lessons give an introduction to the kinds of content and skills each subject will need at IGCSE / GCSE level. For example, in science, students do experiments and learn how to describe what they did and explain the conclusions they reached in the same way as they will need to do for the exam course.

In history, students look at evidence and how to examine sources and write up and explain their findings – skills that are important irrespective of the actual period to be studied.

Throughout, students develop their use of the English language appropriate for studying and for life in a boarding school and the UK generally while socialising with others of many different nationalities. Students learn to analyse texts, develop research skills and present conclusions and results orally, in debates or in written form. Drama lessons help increase confidence in speaking and performing.

Students can come for the whole eight weeks or can register for 2, 3, 4, or 6 weeks. For a thorough preparation, we recommend as much time as possible. You can study the same four subjects for the whole time, or choose different subjects in different two-week sections.

My teachers were wonderful, they were very kind, and if I asked a question they explained until I understood.
